Goings On in NYC

Hello Friends!

It's been a little while since my last post. (No one's surprised, I'm sure ;)) We've been doing some fun things since then...

Cherry Blossoms = Fail (again)
After missing the cherry blossoms in DC, we tried to catch them here in NYC. On Good Friday, we went to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, whose website said the cherry blossoms were in bloom. However, their website was lying. Ok, maybe there were 5 trees in bloom, but definitely not enough to be claiming that the cherry blossoms were in bloom. AND, as has been the case here for all of April and the early part of May, it was way too cold. So, it wasn't the best day to be outside touring a garden, but we tried our best. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens were very nice, and there were plenty of other lovely things to view besides the cherry blossoms. We will definitely go back now that spring has FINALLY sprung, and we have some nice weather.

Easter Saturday/Sunday

We went to the Easter Vigil service at our church on Saturday night before Easter. Neither of us had been to an Easter Vigil service and thought it sounded nice. For those of you who don't know what a Easter Vigil service is, it is a LONG service that basically goes through the Old Testament covenants and New Testaments miracles, obviously including Christ's resurrection. Even though it was long (3 hours - even the priest made a couple cracks about how long the service is), it was very nice. The first half of the service is candlelight only, and then when you get to the part of the resurrection, the lights come on, the organ flairs - very reverent and ethereal. It was a very uplifting and inspiring service. I think we might start doing that every year, and next time we'll be more prepared for the service length ;) The next morning, we attended the Easter Sunday service, which was beautiful, and then went out for brunch, where we both got to indulge in breads/pastries/desserts that we had given up for Lent.

Lombardi

At the end of April, we got free tickets to a Broadway show - compliments of my membership in TheaterMania Gold Club. (Pretty much the whole reason I joined was for free Broadway tickets, so glad when a play became available that we wanted to go see!) We saw Lombardi with Dan Lauria as Lombardi (best known as the dad on "The Wonder Years") and Judith Light as Lombardi's wife (best known as Angela Bower on "Who's The Boss?"). Even though neither Matt nor I are huge Packers or Lombardi fans, we really enjoyed the play. There was only a cast of 6, however, each person played their role superbly. I have to say Judith Light was awesome, and I think a stand out in this play. All in all, we were super happy to have a second Broadway play under our belts and can't wait to see more.

Keg 229

I subscribe to Thrillist, an daily newsletter that highlights fun new things in your area. Here I learned about Keg 229 and had been wanting to try it out. As luck would have it, GiltCity had a deal for Keg 229 that featured 2 Beer Flights, Pigs In A Blanket and a Large Soft Pretzel - who could pass that up?? (Yes, I do subscribe to a lot of social newsletter/coupon sites, but that is how we get to do so much fun stuff :)). Keg 229 was pretty great. The beer was good, and the apps were yummy. Also, the brunch menu looked very nice, and we may have to go back for that one weekend. However, the best part was discovering Fulton Market, where Keg 229 is located. This is a little seaport-ish area at Pier 17 that has great bars, restaurants and the like. We loved the area (even if it was a bit touristy) and will go to hang out again.
