Summer Wrap Up

Well, the summer is officially over :( I think for most, the end of summer is marked by Labor Day weekend or the start of school. So, the official end of summer is just that - making it official. However, it still makes me sad. Summer is my favorite season - it so warm, sunny and full of fun. Sigh...

Lazy Labor Day
Labor Day weekend kind of snuck up on me and Matt. Usually we have some plans - BBQs, food/beer/wine festival, a trip...something. However, this summer, we've both been so busy that we didn't even think about Labor Day weekend until just a few days before, which made for a lazy Labor Day weekend of just hanging around. We ended up having a 'food day' on Saturday where we re-visited some restaurants for specific cravings - French Roast for french toast (which was divine) and Hill Country BBQ. Then we were able to fit in one more beach day on Sunday and a movie day on Monday - like I said, lazy Labor Day weekend.

We were having coffee at French Roast a few weekends ago when the table next to us ordered the french toast. We were obviously (and probably embarrassingly) ogling our neighbor's meal. So, we decided we had to return for the french toast one day when we had the room in our calories (we have been training for a half marathon so there are many days when we have a long run and have some extra calories to use as a splurge). So after a 10-mile run Saturday morning, we went to French Roast and gleefully ordered the french toast. It was sooooo good!

So freakin' good!! :)

Below is the other half of our breakfast (egg whites, Canadian bacon and breakfast potatoes) - also good but not as sinful. That's how we 'splurge.' We share and each have half splurge and half healthy so we don't have to feel too guilty ;)

That night, we revisited Hill Country because the first time we went, we tried to go healthy and ordered grilled chicken (with BBQ sauce) and a side of salad greens. It was ok. So, we went to Hill Country for dinner, and since we had extra calories to burn this day, thought we would do it up right with real BBQ/sides. We ordered brisket, mashed sweet potatoes and mac and cheese. The food was good, but I still wasn't super impressed. This place is billed as one of the best BBQ places in NYC; I think it is over-rated, but that's just me. It is still one of our favorite venues for Texas country music, so we are there often. (I took pics of the food, which looked yummy on our actual table, but the pics don't look too appetizing. So, I won't subject you to them ;))

US Open 2012
We finally got to go to the US Open. We went last year, but saw about 18 minutes of play before the rain started, which continued all day. We got replacement tickets for this year's open, and at the beginning of the day, we thought it might be a repeat rain-out. However, around 1pm the sun came out and play started. We got to see Maria Sharapova (RUS, #3) defeat Marion Bartoli (FRA, #11) in the first part of the day. And, in the second part of the day we say Andy Roddick (USA, #20) lose (unfortunately) to Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG, #7). However, since this was Roddick's last US Open and his official retirement game (I think), they let him say a few heartfelt words, gave him a really nice send off and the crowd gave him a long-lasting standing ovation. It was really moving to be there for that, and maybe we even witnessed a small part of tennis history ;)

Optimistic about the weather (even with the wet ground)!

Waiting for clear skies and for play to resume.

Enjoying the games :)

Thank you, Andy!

The New York Botanical Garden
We hadn't yet been to The New York Botanical Garden (we have been to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden), which is reason enough to go. But, they also have a Monet exhibit going on right now that Matt and I really wanted to see. So, this past weekend we made the trip up to the Bronx to The New York Botanical Garden. It was really nice. The garden itself is lovely - reminds me of my favorite park in London (Regent's Park). And, the Monet exhibit was really, really amazing. I love Monet so the re-creation of his gardens was cool to see. Plus, there were two paintings on display in the exhibition hall/library that have never been displayed in the US. Of course, we were not allowed to take pics of the paintings, so I can't share those with you, but I hope you enjoy these pics of the awesome water lilies.

In other news...
I started my penultimate (SAT word) semester of nursing school. I am really excited about this semester as it is the Maternity/Pediatrics semester, and I am pretty sure this is the area I want to work in once I graduate and get my license. I am also tutoring nursing students in Medical-Surgical nursing (which I took last semester), so it should be a full, but rewarding semester.

I had my first celebrity sighting in a while - Terry O'Quinn of Lost and many other TV series and movies. He is currently in the new drama series 666 Park Avenue, which is probably why he is in NYC.
