Hodge-Podge Catch Up

There are some things that don't need a whole blog post dedicated to them, but that I would like to share anyways.  So, this is a hodge-podge type of post for those little things :)

Succulent Garden Update

My very favorite succulents started growing these very weird spikes.  At first, I didn't know if this was a weed or part of the plant.  Whichever it was, I didn't think it was very pretty and was tempted to prune it off.  However, I let it be as I didn't want to over-prune my succulents and was curious as to what it actually was.  A few weeks later, I learned this was the flowering part of this particular succulent - glad I didn't cut it off!

Now that the flowers have died off, I have pruned off these spikes.  I hope they grow back in the next flowering season.

All in all, I have done pretty well for my first gardening attempt.  I have had my little succulent garden out on our balcony for 10 months now and have only lost 2 of the 12 plants, and this was mainly due to over-pruning.  It seems one particular type of succulent that I purchased is prone to rot, and I had to keep cutting leaves off.  Finally, I just cut the whole trunk off thinking they might regenerate (as succulents are known to do), but no such luck.  I will just replace those when it is time to re-pot in February with different (and hopefully heartier!) succulents.

Blue Apron Update

Matt and I are still loving Blue Apron.  Sometimes the meals require a little more prep effort than we would like, but they are always tasty!  We are continuing to learn new cooking techniques and experiencing different types and flavors of food that are so interesting and yummy :)  Here are some of the prettier dishes we have made in the last few months.

Ras El Hanout Chicken Pita with Cherry Tomato and Cucumber Tabbouleh
Steak and Roasted Potato with Sauteed Long Beans and Tomato
Mexican-style Chicken Tortas with Cucumber, Tomato and Avocado Salad
Seared Salmon and Panzanella with Corn, Shishito Peppers and Thai Basil
Pork Ramen with Ramen Noodles (for Matt) and Sauteed Eggplant
Sumac-spice Steak with Honeynut Squash and Apple/Walnut Salad
Harissa Lamb and Beef Burgers (sans bun) with Roasted Carrot Fries
Roast Chicken and Vegetables with Potato Latkes and Apple Chutney
