Braving the Heat!

As I'm sure you've heard and experienced - it's hot! It's hot everywhere! In NYC, we broke a record high on Friday of 104 degrees! I seem to remember having a hot, very sweaty summer last year and hearing similar record-breaking talk. My 'notions' of mild New York summers have been shattered :(

Anyways, Matt and I try not to let the heat keep us down and literally braved the heat Friday night at an outdoor screening of Back to the Future on the Intrepid. We had been wanting to try movie night at the Intrepid for a while. As Back to the Future is a classic and one of Matt's Top 10 Movies, we decided to go. Though super hot, it was a lot of fun. How can you not enjoy watching Back to the Future?

Saturday night we were a little more heat savvy and spent our night out, but indoors. We had tickets to see Reckless Kelly with opening act, Micky and The Motorcars (love them!) at the Bowery Ballroom. Now, one of our very favorite places (Meatball Shop) is in that area, but we decided to try someplace new and were not disappointed. We had a lovely Italian dinner of local vegetables and La Pappardelle (really large, flat fettuccine-like noodles in a veal ragu - yum!) at Emporio. Besides good food, Emporio had a romantic, intimate, yet somehow open atmosphere. It is definitely a place we recommend and would go back to whenever we are in the area.

The lovely atrium of Emporio area where we had our dinner.

Sunday we continued to find ways to stay inside but still be out and about, so what better than a boozy brunch? ;) A popular brunch spot in our neighborhood, The Sunburnt Calf, has an $18 entree + endless cocktail brunch special. Not a bad deal at all, and we had been meaning to check it out. I had the steak sandwich, which was pretty delicious. Matt had the signature burger, which was (not kidding) about 6 inches tall - huge bun, hamburger patty, cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, beets, bacon, fried egg, pineapple - the works! We should have gotten a picture before we deconstructed it, but we are bad about digging in and thinking about food pics later - oh well. The food was yummy and even better when washed down with endless mimosas :)

All in all, a pretty good weekend despite the crazy heat. Hope everyone else had a good weekend and was able to keep cool.
