Brighton Beach, NY

This past weekend we had some glorious weather, and so we decided to check out one of the New York beaches. We chose the closest natural beach, Brighton Beach, in the very southern part of Brooklyn. It was an hour subway ride away, which was a bit of a bummer but still closer than we've ever been to a beach anywhere else we've lived! The neighborhood calls itself "Little Russia by the Sea," and I'm sure that gives you a fairly 'colorful' vision of the neighborhood right away, but as Matt puts it, "I wouldn't come here at night unless you want to rumble with the Russian mafia."

Even though the neighborhood was a little shady, the beach was quite lovely with soft sand and calm waves. The beach also had a boardwalk that led to Coney Island, with a few small eateries (Russian cuisine, of course ;)) along the way. After laying on the beach for a few hours, we walked down the boardwalk to Coney Island, and that little glimpse was about all we needed to see of Coney Island (this will not make it on our bucket list). Then we tucked into Cafe Volna for lunch where we enjoyed salad, tuna stroganoff and Carlsberg. The food was actually quite yummy (or maybe it was because we had been outside all day, but I thought it was tasty) and the beer was good :) All in all, it was a lazy, warm, relaxing day, and we can't wait to try out more New York beaches!

The famous Coney Island face.
